JERSEY CITY, N.J., FEB. 9, 2018 — Michael Testa, 13, left, and his brother Nicholas, 11, showed off their pizza-tossing skills with their sister Chloe, 6, during a break from helping their parents, Carmine and Diana, prepare 15 cheese pizzas they will be donating to St. Lucy’s Shelter at the family-owned Carmine’s Pizza Factory in Downtown Jersey City. The brothers, known as the ‘Jersey Pizza Boys,’ who became viral sensations on YouTube with their pizza-tossing skills, have partnered with online and mobile pizza ordering platform Slice and New York-based non-profit organization Slice Out Hunger to launch ‘Pizza Across America,’ a nationwide effort to help fight hunger, kicking it off on National Pizza Day. KEARNY, N.J., MARCH 15, 2018 — Friends and family held a vigil for standout soccer star Adrian Velasquez, 19, at Harvey Field. Velasquez was killed in a crash in Delaware on March 9. Velazquez was a star soccer player at Kearny High School where he graduated in 2017. He scored a game-winning goal in the 2016 North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 final. SECAUCUS, N.J., APRIL 20, 2018 — Senior citizens were treated to an evening of dinner, dancing and prizes during the ninth annual Spring Fling prom organized by the Secaucus SAIL (Service Activities Involvelment and Leadership) program at the Secaucus High School Arthur F. HOBOKEN, N.J., APRIL 23, 2018 — Port Authority police officers Catherine Conant, center, and Krystal Armenti visited Sathya Priya Senthil and her newborn baby daughter, Sailakshmi Karthik, at the Hoboken University Medical Center hospital. They, along with Port Authority Police Officer DanaFuller, helped to deliver the baby girl in the backseat of an Uber car just outside the Lincoln Tunnel in Weehawken on the way to a hospital in New York City. JERSEY CITY, N.J., JULY 19, 2018 — The Jersey City Police Department held a Books & Badges event at the Cunningham Branch Public Library where officers gave away free books and snacks to kids, read them stories, helped them make bookmarks and bracelets, let them look inside a patrol car and talk on its speaker and even try on a bullet-proof vest. BAYONNE, N.J., JULY 20, 2018 — Gianna Garcia, 10, of Bayonne, has been fighting a rare form pediatric brain cancer called Anaplastic Ependymoma since May 2016. She and nine other children continue to fight the disease despite no known treatment yet. An annual charity softball game raised funds to help Gianna and her family fight her brain tumor. David’s Barbershop in Jersey City hosted its annual back-to-school event, dubbed “Super Hero Edition” together with other local barbers and motorcycle clubs. HARRISON, N.J., SEPT. 21, 2018 — Over 1,000 students from Lincoln Elementary School, Hamilton Intermediate School, and Washington Middle School came together for an annual international art and literacy project known as “Pinwheels for Peace” in observance of World Peace Day. Students in grades kindergarten through 8th designed and created pinwheels with messages of peace, tolerance, and living in harmony which they planted in a gigantic 40-foot peace sign on the lawn outside of the town’s public library. UNION CITY, N.J., NOV. 8, 2018 — Dassen, a 20-year-old African penguin from Jenkinson’s Aquarium, charmed students during lecture at Hudson County Community College North Hudson Campus in Union City. Jenkinson’s Aquarium penguin supervisor Nicole Ginsburg, with animal interpreter Jake Avelenda, held a “Penguin Lecture” providing an in-depth view of a real penguin’s life, habitat, care and feeding.
