BAYONNE, N.J., APRIL 18, 2017 — Bayonne’s famous boxer, Chuck Wepner, jokingly posed for a photo with a bear trophy at Dillin’s tire and auto shop. Wepner once fought a live bear named Victor the Bear in a boxing ring. A movie about his life “Chuck” (formerly “The Bleeder”) premiered at South Cove Commons on May 12. JERSEY CITY, N.J., JULY 4, 2017 — Jersey City is hosted its fourth annual Freedom and Fireworks Festival to celebrate the Fourth of July. After three years in Liberty State Park, this year’s festival was moved to Exchange Place after the state government was shut down following a budget impasse. JERSEY CITY, N.J., JULY 11, 2017 — Students grades 4 to 8 from Jersey City Schools 30 and 41 who were participating in Innovation Nation, a six-week comprehensive summer program sponsored by Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County, went on a fun and STEM-focused educational sailing trip in the New York Harbor on board the schooner A.J. Meerwald, New Jersey’s Official Tall Ship, which departed from Liberty State Park. The kids got a hands-on experience raising a mast with the crew. BAYONNE, N.J., SEPT. 7, 2017 — The largest capacity container ship ever to visit the U.S. east coast, the CMA CGM Theodore Roosevelt, passed under the newly elevated Bayonne Bridge on its maiden voyage to the United States. JERSEY CITY, N.J., NOV. 1, 2017 — Hundreds of mourners turned out for a candlelight vigil for Jerry “Prince Bee” Grant, an 8-year-old member of the Honey Bees, Jersey City’s famed double Dutch troupe, at the Newark pedestrian plaza in Downtown Jersey City near where Grant was fatally struck by a car on Oct. 28. A member of the Honey Bees double Dutch team tearfully looked at a framed photo of Grant as she mourned his death. The vigil was hosted by Jersey City Stands and Safe Streets JC. JERSEY CITY, N.J., NOV. 15, 2017 — Jose “Migue” Malave’s mother, Maria Cancel, cried as she looked at a framed photo of him. The family and friends of Jose “Migue” Malave held a candlelight vigil for him outside his home on Palisade Avenue where he was stabbed to death the day before. JERSEY CITY, N.J., NOV. 17, 2017 — The Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County marked Children’s Grief Awareness Day with help from New York Life volunteers. Students wrote messages to loved ones they’ve lost or to people who are grieving on pieces of colored cut-out paper which adorned a paper tree. (Reena Rose Sibayan | The Jersey Journal)
The Honey Bees double Dutch jump rope team also performed in honor of one of their own, Jerry “Prince Bee” Grant, 8, who was fatally struck by a car on Oct. 28. Last year, New York Life Foundation gave a $3 million grant to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to help it increase member access to youth and grief resources by expanding “Be There: A National Grief and Bereavement Initiative” to 90 clubs to enable staff to recognize the signs of a grieving child or teen and equip them with the skills to support the emotional needs of youth facing adversity, such as loss of a loved one. JERSEY CITY, N.J., NOV. 21, 2017 — Jocelyn Torres, who was promoted to sergeant, got a hug after a promotion ceremony by the Jersey City Police Department at City Hall. JERSEY CITY, N.J., NOV. 28, 2017 — Sheriff’s Officer Ralph Sosa fixed the peaked cap of his wife, Fallon Sosa, before pinning on her badge after she was sworn in as sheriff’s officer. JERSEY CITY, N.J., DEC. 12, 2017 — Officer Dina Lionakis shopped with Demi Lee, 7, left, and sister Delilah Lowe, 5, who were accompanied by their grandmother, Diana. The Jersey City Police Department hosted the Fourth Annual ‘Shop with a Cop’ holiday event. More than 100 Jersey City children between 4 and 13 years old got the opportunity to shop with East District police officers at the Target in Newport. They were able to buy gifts for themselves or for other people on their holiday list. Since its inception in 2014, hundreds of children from Jersey City have participated in the yearly holiday event. The police department coordinates with East District Public Schools to determine which students would most benefit from the program. Each shopper received a $100 Target gift card. The two-day event is funded through donations from local businesses, corporate sponsors and private donations. Target also gave all participating shoppers a 10-percent discount. JERSEY CITY, N.J., DEC. 18, 2017 — The most expensive rental unit in Jersey City history, the Ellipse’s penthouse five, is a 2,300-square-foot, four-bedroom apartment with jaw-dropping southeastern views of the Hudson River and Manhattan skyline. It also comes equipped with a private terrace, three-and-a-half bathrooms, and of course, a hefty $10,995 monthly rent, making it the priciest rental in the city’s history, according to Ellipse officials.
